Some financial bloggers — not the pro economists, who are more sanguine — say the next recession will be much worse than the 2008 crash. If the next one starts while Trump is still in office, he will probably do a Hoover and tank the economy even more, leaving it to the next administration to clean up the mess.

The children are fair game. If they bring their children to protests in public, then there is no reason not to counter the arguments. (You don’t have to be mean to the children, just truthful.)
The videos of such things are good for countering those arguments with people who may never have run into this before, to provide context to a third person. Counter-apologetics is for people who have never encountered the arguments before, not for those making them.
Such videos would be good on a platform such as YouTube, where billions of people can see them and see what such people are really arguing for.

I have online friends in the States who have ordered Bitmain machines, and when UPS delivers it, they ask for the customs duties COD — usually around $200-300. If Trump raises the tariffs to 25%, those duties are going to make it pointless to even buy one of those things. Even with Bitcoin values rising, it’s barely profitable to operate the things now.

So GMO can be better for Diabetes unless it is a modification to make the produce a sugar hand grenade, of course…
As to fructose vs. sucrose, fructose is taken up faster by the body. I have that morsel of knowledge in my spine since my childhood because one of my classmates way back is a Type I.

re: #81 Anymouse 🌹
My wife just spent three days writing a takedown for a nutbar at the American Diabetes Association who claimed everything from the ketogenic diet is good for treating diabetes to GMOs are inherently bad for diabetes.
The guy went on a monumental Gish Gallop of woo quackery.
She posted her reply here:
Like our esteemed church protestor, such takedowns aren’t meant for the true believer who posts such nonsense.
They are for the third-party who might go into a trusted site like the American Diabetes Association and read their nonsense thinking this is real medicine rather than some GoogleU graduate pushing nonsense (and trying to kill someone).
The only thing the ketogenic diet has ever been shown to be effective for (and its spinoffs like the Atkins Diet) is certain types of epilepsy in children.
It is getting serious study for epilepsy in adults, by real researchers and physicians.
The GMO nonsense is just that.
Proud of my wife tonight for tearing apart a woo medicine promoter.
Thanks! A good, succinct explanation of the keto diet mechanism.

Speaking of guys on thrones… Trump continues to act as though he’s guilty. Cohen reports to prison today, and Trump’s tweeting out that Mueller shouldn’t testify. If the report exonerates him as Trump claims, why not have Mueller testify to that fact.
The reality, as we all know, is the report is the opposite of exoneration. It’s a roadmap to impeachment, removal from office, and indictment on federal felonies. Trump knows this, and he’s counting on GOP obstructionism to ride this out.
At the same time, his North Korea gambit is falling apart as he appeals to Jong Un claiming that they have an understanding (they don’t - Jong Un played Trump and Jong Un is getting everything he wants and Trump gets nothing), which means that he’s got to focus on Iran (which doesn’t have nukes because the Obama JCPOA deal that Trump continually attacks is the one thing that got Iran to hold off on their weapons program). Oh, and Hamas and Israel have another flare up, because Jared’s so effective with his peace deals.

Former President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder won’t tell the truth when it comes to their redistricting strategy, but here it is: Pick a state, any state, and sue until it’s blue. They have spent years and millions of dollars selling the false narrative that Democrats draw “fair maps” while any and all Republican-drawn maps are “partisan gerrymanders.” While rhetorically cute, their primary goal has nothing to do with fighting gerrymandering as they repeatedly claim, but to put redistricting in the hands of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats and lifetime-appointed judges.
Their strategy makes sense. There are plenty of unelected federal judges presiding over these redistricting cases who will enthusiastically toss out constitutionally drawn maps to help elect more Democrats. That’s exactly what happened recently in both Michigan and Ohio, despite the entirely dubious and suspect arguments from the left. It will also not be a surprise if liberal federal panels do the same thing in other states in the coming weeks.

So, I watched the Dany v. Cersei Battle Chess match.
Cersei’s opening was very strong. Dany has lost some pieces, entering the middle game. Both sides are considering their next move. Cersei is trying to provoke Dany into doing something stupid, like risking her last most powerful piece in a direct attack on the Queen of King’s Landing. OTOH, Cersei is over-confident, which means she’s bound to go down in some kind of Greek-tragedy way. Her brother Jamie? Arya of the Needle? A dragon falling on top of her?

The church formerly known as Mormon has dropped a requirement that couples who have a civil marriage must wait a year before a temple sealing. The prior rule was applied unequally as some countries require a civil marriage. This primarily affected US couples.
A friend of mine got married to her husband civilly here in the USA because Mexico doesn’t recognize temple marriages. She had a hassle with her church leaders trying to explain why this had to happen. This was pretty touch and go. Her in laws could not get visas to come to the USA for a marriage. You would think knowing the history of the Jewish people, he would be a little bit empathetic towards newcomers but nope, he’s Bill the Butcher in how he views immigrants.
His extreme views on abortion are a suckup to evangelicals. There is nothing in Judaism that places a fetus at the same level as the pregnant woman.

Yep. That’s another thing. He’s extremely anti choice. I’m not a theologian but my understanding is Judaism takes a much more philosophical pro choice position than not. He’s so eager for Evangelicals to like him that he overlooks his own religion’s tenets and conflates them with Conservative Christianity’s.
re: #203 Joe Bacon 🌹

He just thinks he can crap on American Jews because most of them don’t share his extreme political views and that makes it okay for him to question their devotion to Jewish customs. It’s sick. And he does it repeatedly.
They only started using Judeo-Christian when overt Antisemitism became socially unacceptable. And before that they really meant Protestant since Catholics didn’t fit their philosophical worldview either. In short, he’s pretty much using the same rhetoric that people used to argue that Jews couldn’t integrate into America and that’s bs. And I think most American Jews are aware of that history. I suspect he is too but he’s such a blatant partisan hack he doesn’t care.

Exodus 21:22 et seq — if you assault a pregnant woman in such a way as to cause a miscarriage, but the woman is otherwise unharmed… that’s a misdemeanor. Financial compensation is required. But it’s definitely not murder, and the penalty for killing that fetus is far, far less than the penalty for killing a human being.
Numbers 5:11 et seq — if the husband of a pregnant woman believes he’s not the father, religious law requires she drink a potion and undergo a ritual that’s supposed to reveal God’s verdict on the accusation. If it turns out she really did cheat and get pregnant by someone other than her husband, the pregnancy MUST be terminated. She cannot be allowed to take it to term.
Back in the days before modern medicine, before c-sections were a survivable thing… if a delivery was going very badly and it seemed unlikely to end up with a live mother and live child and a decision had to be made — a Jewish midwife or doctor would cut that half-born child into pieces if that’s what it took to get it out of her. If a choice had to be made between the woman and the child, if there didn’t seem to be a way to save both, then keeping the woman alive was absolutely the higher priority. Every time.

Thanks. Not being Jewish, I wasn’t aware of the cultural and historical contexts. He seems to be against abortion in all circumstances and he has a right to that opinion but as you point out, it’s at odds with Judaism’s scripture and history. So it seems to me that he twists just as much as the more liberal Jews he decries.

When I was a teenager, I wound up quite infatuated with an African American girl. We started “dating”, as kids do, and of course, I brought her around to meet the parents.
My parents came from the WWII generation, and let’s be blunt, interracial relationships were, by and large, frowned upon. That being said, after getting over some initial surprise, they accepted it, somewhat grudgingly. We ended dating for about a year (and oh yeah, I heard all kinds of shit from our 99.9% white classmates) and then she moved away and that was that.
After I got divorced from my Czech ex-wife, my dad told me, “Ah, you shouldn’t have married your ex; she was stuck-up. You shoulda married that black girl you were dating when you were a kid - she had a good head on her shoulder and she was damned smart, too.”
Heh. That came as something of a surprise to me.
